It is put wherever it works to fit the suspension linkage, water bottle cages, piggy back etc. That is what I would have guessed, all has to do with the engineering but it seems that many of the popular manufacturers have switched the shock to the vertical position and you know it gets more mud and dirt at that location rather than the top tube. Maybe lubrication concerns. Or weight saving. It seems that different manufacturers position the shock either parallel with the top tube or perpendicular and some have even changed over the years with their new bikes and now go with the vertical position for the shock. A manufacturer is limited in that the suspension has to be the same across the size range- a vertical mount limits how low the top tube can be and how tall the shock assembly can be. On the other hand, a horizontal mount limits how large the swing link can be, and can affect how the suspension behaves on different sizes. Also, a top tube that has to manage shock forces needs to be beefier, whereas with a vertical mount those loads can go into the seat tube and BB region which already need to manage large forces. With a trunion mount and more sophisticated tubing/carbon manufacturers can go with a vertical linkage and still have a reasonable leverage ratio and size range. Thanks march of progress! We're seeing more vertical designs now mostly because of composites and sophisticated design. Some linkage designs are better served by being operated by the lower or upper link. For example, with VPP they can't help but have a 'hiccup' in the travel unless the shock is operated by the lower link. Some designs have used the varying movement between the upper and lower links to tweak how the suspension behaves. For XC bikes a TT linkage is appealing- they don't need a large link, the small swing link is light and stiff, and there's plenty of room on even a short TT bike to fit a low leverage shock and have room for a water bottle. Ultimately how the shock is positioned means nothing in itself, but you can be sure there was a lot of thought on the designer's end in how to best capture the ride he wanted throughout the size range. It is conceivable that the shock itself may function somewhat differently depending on orientation, like air can fluid migrating to the smaller negative chamber for example, which might argue for mounting it vertically upside-down, or gas getting on the wrong side of the IFP, which might also argue for vertically upside-down for most shocks...maybe? I feel that having a low/ centrally mounted shock is good for weight distribution and will result in a lighter feeling and more flickable ride. Scottzg point is well taken regarding the stresses on the top tube. Various top tube shock positioning sometimes has additional tube reinforcement at that point to compensate for the stresses. I agree, or think that the vertical position help to keep more weight lower towards the center of gravity and works well with having a substantial seat tube post, especially with carbon frames. Most older Treks always had the shock on the TT while now I see all of them almost all in the vertical position. Perhaps when other manufacturers design newer models they will also use this shock position in the design? Time will tell. See less See more
